Most comparisons stop at the plan cards, and on the cards these two look almost identical. The money is in three lines the cards leave out: the mailboxes you have to buy, the lead data each vendor sells separately, and what an agency pays per client. This page prices all three at three real volumes. For the full rate card and an interactive calculator, see our Instantly pricing and Smartlead pricing pages.

Which is cheaper, Instantly or Smartlead?
It depends on volume. Smartlead is cheaper at entry ($39 against $47) and usually cheaper all in for a small team that also buys lead data, because its $59 lead add-on is flat while Instantly's credits scale with use. Instantly is cheaper per email at 125,000 emails a month, and cheaper on plan price for agencies sending several hundred thousand emails.
The three scenarios below use each vendor's own done-for-you Google mailbox price ($5 a month on Instantly, $4.50 on Smartlead), 30 sends per mailbox a day, 21 sending days a month and three mailboxes per domain, with the yearly domain fee spread over twelve months. Monthly billing throughout.
What 5,000 emails a month costs on each
A founder sending 5,000 cold emails a month needs about 8 mailboxes on 3 domains.
- Instantly: Growth $47, mailboxes $40, domains $3.75. $90.75 a month.
- Smartlead: Base $39, mailboxes $36, domains $3.25. $78.25 a month.
Smartlead is $12.50 cheaper with your own list. Now add 1,000 found work emails a month. On Instantly that is about 1,500 credits, which is exactly the $47 Growth Credits plan, so the bill becomes $137.75. On Smartlead it is the $59 verified prospect emails add-on, and the bill becomes $137.25. Fifty cents apart.
The deciding factor at this size is not price. Instantly Growth includes the API but keeps its reply inbox in preview mode, so answers go out from each mailbox. Smartlead Base has no API, no webhooks and no CRM access. If you need integrations, the fair comparison is Instantly Growth at $47 against Smartlead Pro at $94, and then Instantly is cheaper.
What 90,000 emails a month costs a small sales team
A team sending 90,000 emails a month to accounts it wants each vendor to source, about 5,000 found work emails a month, needs about 143 mailboxes on 48 domains.
- Instantly: Hypergrowth $97, Supersonic Credits for 7,500 credits $147, mailboxes $715, domains $60. $1,019 a month.
- Smartlead: Pro $94, verified leads add-on $59, mailboxes $643.50, domains $52. $848.50 a month.
Smartlead is $170.50 a month cheaper here, and almost none of that gap is the plan. The plans differ by $3. The rest is $88 of lead data, because Smartlead's add-on stays at $59 up to 30,000 verified emails while Instantly charges by the credit, and $79.50 of mailboxes and domains. Move Instantly to its $4 Airmail accounts and the gap closes to $27.50. Instantly does leave headroom: Hypergrowth sends up to 125,000 emails, where Smartlead Pro stops at 90,000 and the next plan is $174.
Whichever tool you pick, verify the list before it goes in. A bounced address costs you sender reputation on every mailbox it touches, and an email finder with verification built in catches the dead ones before either tool sends to them.
Is Smartlead better than Instantly for agencies?
On plan price, no. An agency sending 300,000 emails a month for six clients from its own lists pays Instantly $271 (Hypergrowth plus two $87 Outreach add-ons, which reach 375,000 emails). On Smartlead 300,000 emails is past Unlimited Smart's 150,000, so the plan is Unlimited Prime at $379, which includes three client workspaces, plus three more at $29, $466 a month. Instantly is $195 cheaper on the plans.
Two things narrow that. First, Instantly's card prints no price for separate client workspaces, while Smartlead prices whitelabel workspaces openly at $29. Ask Instantly in writing how a workspace per client is billed before you count the $195. Second, at this volume the plans are a small share of the bill. About 477 mailboxes at roughly $4 each is about $1,900 a month on either vendor's cheapest inbox, before domains. The plan choice moves the total by about 8%.
Where each one charges you twice
Both vendors have one pricing trap worth knowing before you buy.
On Instantly, it is the yearly bundles. On monthly billing each bundle is exactly its two parts added together: Starter $94 is $47 plus $47. On yearly billing the bundles are marked "Save 10%", but the separate plans are cut by 20% (10% on the larger credit tiers), so buying the two parts separately costs less. The Agency bundle is $500 a month yearly; Light Speed and Hyper Credits bought separately are $463.60, a difference of $436.80 a year.
On Smartlead, it is the lead add-on on the entry plan. Base at $39 plus the $59 add-on is $98 a month, more than Pro at $94 without it, and Pro sends 15 times as many emails. If you need lead data, start the comparison at Pro.
What neither price includes
Mailboxes and domains, which at volume cost several times the plan on both tools. We work out the inbox count for a campaign in how many inboxes per domain for cold email.
LinkedIn. Neither tool automates it, and most teams pair one of them with a per-sender LinkedIn tool. We price the common choice in HeyReach pricing per sender.
The person running it. Both tools send what someone builds: the target list, the research on each account, the copy, the follow-up rules, and the replies that need an answer the same day. That is the line that does not appear on either card, and for a small team it is usually the largest.
Instantly vs Smartlead vs a flat AI agent
If you already run cold email well and want to send more of it, buy one of these two. Either is among the cheapest ways to send at volume, and the scenarios above tell you which one fits your size.
If outbound is not getting done because nobody has the hours, more sending capacity does not fix it. WorkAgent is a flat $149 a month, month to month. You brief the job and the agent builds the target list, researches each account, writes and sends the sequence, sorts the replies and updates the CRM, and the same plan covers research, inbox and reporting work. It sends far fewer emails per dollar than Instantly or Smartlead, and it fits a team that wants the work finished rather than the volume raised. See how it runs a campaign on AI lead generation software and how we split outbound between you and the agent on AI SDR.
Questions buyers ask about Instantly vs Smartlead pricing
Is Instantly or Smartlead cheaper?
Smartlead is cheaper at entry, $39 for Base against $47 for Instantly Growth, and usually cheaper all in for a small team buying lead data. Instantly is cheaper per email in the middle, $97 for 125,000 emails against $94 for 90,000, and cheaper on plan price for agencies past 150,000 emails a month. Mailboxes cost about the same on both.
Is Instantly better than Smartlead for cold email?
Neither wins outright. Instantly is better if you want a contact database and the sending tool from one vendor, or the API on the entry plan. Smartlead is better if you want the cheapest entry plan, whitelabel client workspaces at a published price, or a flat $59 for lead data rather than paying by the credit.
Do Instantly and Smartlead charge per email account?
No. Both connect unlimited email accounts with no per-mailbox fee and neither prices by seat. Both also resell mailboxes if you do not have them: Instantly at $4 to $10 a month each with $15 domains, Smartlead at $3.99 to $9 each with $13 to $19 domains. At 90,000 emails a month that is about 143 mailboxes on either tool.
Which is better for agencies, Instantly or Smartlead?
On published prices Smartlead is easier to budget, because it prints a $29 price per whitelabel client workspace and includes three on Prime. Instantly is cheaper on plan price at 300,000 emails a month ($271 against $466 for six clients) but prints no per-workspace price, so get its workspace billing in writing before you compare.
Is there a cheaper option than Instantly and Smartlead?
Per email sent, very little beats them. If the cost you are trying to cut is the hours spent building lists, writing copy and working replies, a flat-rate agent such as WorkAgent at $149 a month does that work on the same plan as research and inbox triage, though it sends far fewer emails than either tool.
